Interest in the former Celtic and Tottenham manager was said to have been shown after the decision was taken to sever ties with Ten Hag. The Dutch tactician was relieved of his duties in Leverkusen just two games into the 2025-26 campaign.

Leverkusen finally confirmed the appointment of Kasper Hjulmand as their next head coach in an announcement on Monday. The Bundesliga side's statement read: "Kasper Hjulmand signs on as the new head coach for Bayer 04. Warm welcome to Leverkusen, Coach!"

Hjulmand spent four years in charge of the Denmark national team between 2020 and 2024. He does boast prior experience of life in Germany, but only lasted six months during a forgettable stint in charge of Mainz during the 2014-15 campaign.
